Who Gets Dementia?

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia which accounts for between 50% and 70% of all dementias (Alzheimers Association Fact Sheet, 1999). Dementia can happen to anyone but is not a normal part of ageing.

It is more common over the age of 65. One in four people over the age of 85 have the condition. It can affect people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.  Please read 'Understanding Younger Onset Dementia' (April 2008).

Information on the many different types of dementias, clinical guidelines, medical information, advice for those caring for someone with dementia, and other frequently asked questions can all be viewed here.

More information can also be obtained by contacting the Alzheimers Association Dementia Helpline on 1800 639 331.
