Rural Palliative Care Project
gpns secured federal funding from the Department of Health and Ageing for a 2 year Rural Palliative Care Project (2008-2010) in the Southern Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island regions.
The project aims to:
- further improve accessibility to quality coordinated palliative care services in these regions
- enhance common understandings of models for rural palliative care
- strengthen links between palliative care services and mainstream service delivery.
Overall it plans to strengthen local partnerships and further improve, coordinate and identify any gaps in the provision of quality local palliative care services.

Palliative Care - Quality Resource Guide - A Toolkit
This kit has been prepared by Palliative Care Australia to assist health care services implement the newly developed (4th Edition) of the National Palliative Care Standards. The kit summarises the three key policy documents that guide the provision of quality end of life care in Australia and examines the role delineations between care providers.
The three policy documents are:
1. A Guide to Palliative Care Service Development: A Population Based Approach.
2. Standards for Providing Quality Palliative Care for all Australians.
3. Palliative Care Service Provision in Australia: A Planning Guide.
The kit highlights how the National Palliative Care Standards (4th Edition) supports quality activities and;
1) lists those agencies that support accreditation of palliative care services and
2) the professional associations that support individuals workers in the palliative care sector.
Incorporated are fact sheets for care providers about:
1. The standards and their application and
2. Information sheets on the standards (for providing quality palliative care) and patient’s rights (and responsibilities).
In addition there are two in-service training modules and links to web and other resources in the kit. "The Palliative Care - Quality Resource Guide" can be mailed to you directly, free of charge, by PCA by filling in the form found here.

Southern Adelaide Palliative Services (SAPS)
This service provides an excellent consultancy service for general practitioners. The philosophy of SAPs is that the GP is the primary health care provider for patients who increasingly are choosing to die at home and the multidisciplinary members of the team are always available for phone advice, case conferencing etc. SAPS is located at Daw House Hospice, 700 Goodwood Road, Daw Park. Phone 08 8275 1732.
In-patient services at Daw House Hospice with services also provided at Flinders Medical Centre or Noarlunga Health Services. Admissions are made by a member of the SAPS team for a variety of reasons. These include reassessment and control of pain and other distressing symptoms, to give home carers a period of respite, or for terminal care. SAPS also provides a complementary care service for patients and relatives that includes relaxation, massage, aromatherapy, foot spa, music and cosmetic services. Bereavement support is also offered to help work through the grieving process. There are no costs associated with the service.
Referrals can be made by telephoning the service and can be made by patients, families and health professionals in consultation with their general practitioner.
